Writers’ Pantry #78: Cover Me

Hello, Word Artists and Admirers! Every now and then I get in a mood where I love to hear covers or updated versions of old songs. It’s always interesting to me to compare or contrast the changes between the original and the newer version. I like it especially when there’s a notable difference in feel between the two, or if the emotions they bring up feel different. The latest song on high replay for me is this updated version of Rebel, Rebel, re-done by David Bowie (it's been good company as I edit my rough draft of my Yuuki novel).

Some of my favorite covers are Unchained Melody by Cyndi Lauper, Romeo and Juliet by the Indigo Girls, Hurt by Johnny Cash, and Sound of Silence by Disturbed. Are there any covers or updates that you especially like?

For next Wednesday, Magaly would like us to dance into the world of Micro-writing. If choosing poetry, you can write a haiku, a senryū, an American sentence, a tanka, or an elfchen. If going for prose, the genre is your choice, but the word count must be exactly 69 words.

Now is the time for you to share your word magic. I’m taking old and new, fiction and non-fiction, poetry and prose. Just be sure your prose offerings stick to 369 words or fewer, and one entry per person please.

  1. Thanks for hosting, Rommy. Interesting question – I had never stopped to think about it before, but I now realise I don't usually like covers much at all, because I get so hooked on the originals. The exception is Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. His own version is simply marvellous and can't be beat – but is certainly equalled by Jeff Buckley and k.d.lang!

  3. Good day, Poets!

Covers. I like covers, especially of my rock favourites. They give a new edge, new angle to a song we know well. Like Disturbed's Sound of Silence, it has a darker more urgent feel than the original. First time i am hearing Indigo Girl's Romeo & Juliet, a very good effort but I still prefer the original Dire Straits. :)

  4. Johnny Cash's "Hurt", Diana Ross's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", and Aretha Franklin's "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" are three of my favorites. I love hearing the changes in their voices, the inflections and feels added by years and years. And so much more.

    1. Oh yeah, I'm thinking of the little twists Aretha has added over the years to some classics. They are all worth seeking out.

  6. You have good taste for my ears, and Unchained Melody is near the top of my listening 'back then" but I our version didn't have words. Cyndi Lauper is/was up there too but again, I didn't know or have forgotten her singing that song.
Our house is busy preparing for a SIL to have a triple bypass so I'm laying low this weekend except that I did work up a write for Sunday Muse.
