Friday Writings #100: El Día de Muertos

What’s your favorite Holiday? When I was very little, it used to be the Winter Solstice. The whole family would come together to cook yummy things, to exchange gifts, to dance… And at the center of it all, my grandmother. She was always the heart of the celebration. After she passed away, the Day of the Dead became my favorite Holiday. I felt closer to her spirit at the end of October and beginning of November. I cooked her favorite foods, sang her favorite songs, shared her favorite stories—she was the in the spices, in the lyrics, in the tales, in my heart.

Since the Holiday is almost here, it feels right to invite you, my dearest poets and storytellers, to write poetry or prose inspired by el Día de Muertos (the Day of the Dead).

Required: Post the response to your blog, and add the direct link to that post to Mr. Linky. One post per person, please, 369 words maximum (excluding title), for prose and for poetry.

Optional: You may share old or new pieces, in poetry or prose, and you may write to the prompt or to a topic of your choosing. If you wish to say hello or have questions, leave a note in the comments section below.

Requested (not compulsory but strongly recommended): Visit other writers and storytellers. Read their contributions. Share your thoughts on their words.

next week, Rommy will invite us to work with the phrase “I couldn’t have done it without you”. She tells us that we are free to interpret the expression as loosely as we wish (it can be about a person, an experience, a favorite book, etc.).

Friday Writings #99: Why???

Why am I suddenly experiencing allergy symptoms?

Why isn’t the tradesman I need returning my phone calls?

Why is my cat refusing her favourite food?

Why are these pretty flowers considered weeds?

Why did the Voice referendum in Australia get defeated?

Why are we still having wars in the 21st Century?

Why are Governments hesitating to deal with climate change?

Why on earth are you wearing THAT?

Why am I asking so many questions?

Greetings, dear Wordsmiths!

I am pointing to the fact that there are many mysteries and enigmas in life, many questions and perhaps not so many answers.

For your optional prompt this week, I ask you to title your piece ‘Why – ?’ and fill in the blank, then write to your title question. If you don't want to do that – for whatever reason – you’re welcome to share something else.

Guidelines: Link one post per person, 369 words maximum, poetry or prose, old or new. Enjoy what everyone else shares, and leave encouraging comments when you can. You may also talk to us and each other in the Comments section below.

Next week, Magaly will invite us to write poetry or prose inspired by el Día de Muertos (the Day of the Dead).

Friday Writings #98: Earth, Air, Fire, Water

Greetings, dear poets and storytellers. I hope you are well. Or, at least, as well anyone can be, considering the current state of affairs. I’ve been trying to take the news in very small doses. I’m quite sure the alternative would lead to despair. There is so much chaos and discord. We (all right, I) need a steady measure of empathy, peace, balance.

With that thought, that wish, that hope… in mind, for today’s optional prompt, I invite you to be inspired by one (or more) of the four classical elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water. And if you are feeling extra inspired, all consider the element of Spirit. For me, earth, air, fire, water, and spirit, always conjure a sense of balance.

Friday Writings #97: October!

Hello, word artists and admirers! Rommy here and I'm swapping in for Magaly this week. She tells me the topic is October, which suits me just fine. Although October has taken on some complicated connotations for me (this is the month I lost my first corgi, a close friend to ALS, and my father-in-law) it's always been a month of striking beauty and joy too (the birth of Darling Eldest and my husband's birthday too). Like one of my favorite literary characters, I adore this month and try to spend as much time as I can outside to get better acquainted with its beauty.

So yes, this week's optional prompt is to be like Anne and take inspiration from the month of October. Poetry and prose are welcome, as are fiction and non-fiction. Just keep your posts to 369 words or fewer and one entry per person, please.

Next week, Magaly will be back, asking you to be inspired by one (or more) of the four classical elements: earth, air, fire, and water.
