Writers' Pantry #43: Sunday Morning Cereal

Hello, Word Artists and Admirers! It may be something in the weather (or just the crazy that is 2020) but I’ve been finding myself reaching more for comfort food. Weirdly, it was my husband who reminded me how nice a bowl of cereal can be. He treated himself to a special brand that doesn’t mess up his blood sugars. I couldn’t resist picking a box of my childhood favorite, Life cereal, and having a small bowlful here and there.

I’m thrilled that this indulgence hasn’t affected my weight at all but paired with a good cartoon has helped lift my spirits when needed. I’ll be sure to have some handy when a new run of Animaniacs comes out next month. How do you like to indulge your inner kid?

So let’s take a look at the week ahead. This Wednesday, Rosemary will be offering the chance to try some found poetry (which might or might not be an erasure poem). Or you may write on the subject of finding or losing, or about erasing something.

Now it’s time to indulge our poetic feelings. Sprinkle my Sunday morning cereal with your poetry or prose, fiction or non-fiction, old or new. Just remember, one entry per person and keep prose to 369 words or fewer. Have fun!

  1. Vitally important (or stickybeak) question: if you don't usually eat cereal for breakfast, what do you have? Are you eating cereal at OTHER times of day??? (Oh, they do things very strangely over there in USA!)

    1. I do have it for breakfast, but I'm also having a small bowlful here and there as a snack.

    2. I've also had it as a dinner when the husband and kids had to grab stuff early for evening Zoom meetings/ catch up on classwork and it's just me and Kit. :D

    3. My inner kid likes icecream and chocolates. This week I have Maltesers in the pantry, and some things called Orange Balls which are like giant Jaffas.

    4. I'm going to treat myself to bubble tea next time the opportunity presents itself :D

  2. A couple of rainy nights ago I had instant oats in my coco cup, with chocolate, condensed milk and evaporated milk. I threw the scale, and re-watched the glory days of GOT. All good.

    1. Oh, that sounds wonderful! (Obviously, strange can be a delight.)

    2. Now that's what I'm talking about, Hazel! I wouldn't turn down a bowl of instant oats doctored up that way either.

  3. I've never done an erasure poem, so that might be fun. Sounds a bit difficult though...
I love Life cereal, but it doesn't love me back, so I can't eat it. My inner kid? Licking the spoon from mixing batter? I wonder if I ever stopped indulging it, and that's why not much comes to mind? I almost bought Malt-o-Meal the other day, it sounded so warm and comforting, but it was over $4.00!

    1. I always lick the batter off the spoon... if my kids don't beat me to it first!

    2. There will be instructions for the erasure poems!

    1. Oh, I'm very much into anime as well, and although I'm not particularly good at them, I like video games too.

  6. Fruit binges. My inner child and my outer adult love indulging in fruit. But you already knew that.

    Happiest readings, everyone!

    1. Your love of fruit is quite (in)famous, but I can't blame you for being delighted with them. A perfectly ripe mango is a joy.

    2. Now I must have a mango (or three)!

    3. I am mango-less in PA! But fortunately I have some pomegranates to cheer me up. :D

  7. Oh, to have a bowl of Cap'n Crunch and the original Animaniacs was something I watched with the boys.

I've been spending too much time waiting in the past month. Waiting for replacement parts for equipment, on others in life and sitting in emergency waiting rooms.

The unexpected life we experience. I hope all you all well. Cheers!

    1. I hope that any more unexpected events that arise for you will be gentle and joyful ones. We could all do with more of that and less of their opposite.

    2. Thanks for chiming in, Joel. I was about to try and contact you to ask if things were OK; it's been a while. Sounds like things were NOT OK, but that you've all survived. Whew! It will be good to read your writing again.

    3. I agree, Rommy but now I'm craving a bowl of Fruit Loops that may not be satisfied.

Thank you, Rosemary. We appreciate your concern. One trip to the ER turned into an ambulance ride to a second ER. In the end, it turned out okay. Not knowing what was going on was the worst part of that experience.

    4. I know I'd have been pretty rattled in that situation. I'm glad things ended up OK.

    5. Thanks, Rommy. Life is an adventure, isn't it?

    6. An adventure and a half some days! I'm ready for things to feel less Lord of the Rings type adventure, and more My Little Pony.

  8. My inner kid dances (wildly) around the house whenever the mood strikes. (when Son Carl is working lest he think I've gone round the bend.)

  10. When I was a kid, my favorite cereals were Oreo O's and Reeses Puffs. Basically, whatever was like a dessert! Haha. We didn't get those that often, though. I have fond memories of my mom making oatmeal, adding a smiley face made from honey on top.

    2. My husband loves making smiley faces in the kids' food too. LOL, they are quite grown and roll their eyes a bit now, but still say thank you and smile.

  11. I apologize for any confusion with my post. Blogger goblins have made a change which is infernally confusing for someone working with four blogs (me). My post appeared on the wrong blog and in moving it I lost any comments it had accrued, not to mention lost my patience. I'm going now to make a Blogger doll and stick pins in it.

    1. I understand that impulse, Bev! But could you please make a Blogger doll and give healing to it instead, so that we may all be free of old and new glitches and confusions real soon? Much appreciated; might even join you.

    2. You are not alone, Bev. Blogger changes have made trouble for most of us. I've found myself deleting comments instead of approving them--the icons are so small. And they've done something to the way they handle time zones that has kept us on our toes. If we are lucky, we'll get used to the new stuff before Blogger decides to make them newer (and drives us nuts again). Fingers crossed.

    3. Blogger has been exceedingly frustrating for so many people. I do wish they'd stop "fixing" perfectly functional things.
