Friday Writings #50: Sweet!

Hello, Word Artists and Admirers! Halloween is right around the corner. My kids are past the trick or treat age, but they still haven’t lost their taste for sweets! Although we get plenty of kids visit our neighborhood, I’ll make sure to set a couple of peanut butter cups aside for both of them. Did you ever go trick or treating? What was your favorite thing to see in your Halloween bag?

In honor of Halloween this week’s optional prompt is to use the word “sweet” to inspire your creations. You may (but don’t have to) use the word sweet in your finished piece or the title. You may share an old or new piece as the mood moves you. One entry per person, please and be sure your finished pieces are 369 words or fewer, thanks!

Next week, Rosemary will ask us to write something about the number three.

  1. Giving you a really old one this time, but it came straight into mind when I read the post, and I don't think anyone here has seen it before.

  2. I have to go to the hospital on Halloween, so... I shall trick-or-treat! The doctors always have the best candies (and guavas for me). My favorite thing to find in my bag was (and still is) Milky Way. What about you?

    1. Haha, hadn't thought of treating myself. Halloween is not nearly so big here as it is in America, in fact didn't happen at all when I was growing up. When my own kids were little, it started to come in – copied, like so many things, from you guys.

    2. I'm all for copying the good things--fun should be shared. 😁

    3. Guava sounds lovely. I already have a sweet treat from my tea teacher--local made chocolate that pairs well with matcha!

I will also shamelessly copy something fun.

  3. Good day, Poets & Storytellers!

Halloween is originally (and still) celebrated by the American community here, and I think the locals are slowly catching up. I see Halloween props and stuff being sold at supermarkets here.

Hope you guys all have a good week ahead. I am not 'sweet' this week and is posting an old rant. 😁

    1. It may have been old, but it feels quite timely

  4. I went trick or treating throughout my entire childhood, with the exception of when I was 13 and living in Spain. The last time I went was as a freshman in high school, with a friend. You just don't want to give it up! My favorite treat memory was when my father took me trick or treating. My mother wouldn't have let me eat anything home made, or open (and this was in the 60's), but a house at the end of our street had made cupcakes and had them displayed in their entry way. My dad let me take one and eat it before we got home! I live a block from an elementary school, in a block with sidewalks and street lights, so get a lot of kids. Well, used to, I haven't given out treats, or decorated the yard for the past two years, so we'll see!

    1. That is fascinating to me, in a coungry where it isn't all that big even now. People actually decorate their yards for the occasion? Oh yes, those pumpkins, I suppose. The pumpkins we grow here have very hard shells, but some growers have now started growing the softer-shelled ones like you have over there, which are more easily carved, just for this time of year. They are sold as 'Halloween pumpkins'.

    2. Rosemary, I need to take a picture of my neighbor's place across the way and show it to you. They do Halloween in a BIG way, including the 12 foot skeleton in front of their house.

  5. Well, not unexpectedly, no Halloween callers ventured up my hill in the rain last night. Apparently most decided to go the rounds on Sunday night instead (but didn’t get this far then, either). It is as I’ve been saying: we don’t really get into the full spirit of it here. So now I am left with all this chocolate to eat all by myself. I expect I’ll cope!
