Hello, word artists and admirers! It’s early spring where I live. One of the things I like doing at this time of year is watching the local trees as they slowly begin to wake up after their winter sleep. Since my mind is already on the trees, I thought it might be nice to write about them too. So this week, I’d like you to use the word “tree” as a seed for your word art. The tree(s) in your piece can refer to literal or metaphorical ones. I’m taking poetry and prose, fiction and non-fiction. But please be sure to keep your prose pieces to 369 words or fewer.
Afterword from Rosemary:
April Poetry Month aka NaPoWriMo will be upon us any minute. We don’t offer prompts here to help you write a poem every day, but in case you’d like to give it a go, here are a few of the online places which will. (And of course we’re happy to read any results you care to share with us here, on Sundays or even – if they fit – on Wednesdays.)
April PAD Challenge at Poetic Asides. Prompts from Robert Lee Brewer.
Poetic Bloomings run by Walt Wojtanic and Marie Elena Good, using Robert Brewer’s April prompts and poeming alongside Poetic Asides in a smaller group.
Also look for Kerry O’Connor @skyloverpoetry on Instagram, find her post ‘April is the Cruellest Month’ and swipe to see her wordlist of prompts plus instructions how to use them. (There are various options.)
I will be participating in the National Poetry Month writing again this year. I may not post everyday, I have several oxen in my ditch that need to be cared for. I said that last year and posted one every day, we will see. I am working on one for tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThe group that I work with is at https://www.napowrimo.net/ (paste it in if it doesn't click) We had in the high 100's, sometimes in the 200's. I have been posting there since 2015. We have an early bird prompt but I think that I will be using the regular one. I might use the early bird's efforts at times and mix and match the dates.
..
Thanks for this information, Jim. I had heard of Maureen's prompt site but this is the first time I've taken a look. It seems she as the original impetus behind April NaPoWriMo!
DeleteThanks for the heads up Jim!
DeleteThat's the one I use, too. In fact, it is through that site that I first learned about NaPoWriMo. There are so many other prompts, though, that I might not respond to very many prompts from that site. We will see!
DeleteThanks, Rommy, for your inspiring prompt, which allowed me to enjoy revisiting my childhood.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for allowing me to hijack your post with the April Poetry Month information!
It was a delightful piece. I loved starting off my morning with it.
DeleteHAPPY WEDNESDAY EVERYONE
ReplyDelete"A poem lovely as a tree. A nest of robins in her hair; ... Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree."
--What is the theme of the poem Trees by Joyce Kilmer
much love...
Hope your Wednesday is good too.
DeleteI am not participating in NaPoWriMo, but I am participating in an April bloggers challenge, where we post daily (Sundays off) from A to Z on any theme. I am doing poetry forms and writing a poem for each form. http://www.a-to-zchallenge.com/
ReplyDeleteI see NaPoWriMo will have prompts, but we aren't required to use them. Maybe I'll join that too, just write poems for Sundays too!
I've been a bit behind with the prompts here due to life events keeping me busier than usual. I'm trying to buy out some time for this prompt though.
Good luck with your poetry writing for April, and thanks for letting us know about the A to Z challenge!
DeleteI will write something for this soon and am really looking forward to all the poems in April!
ReplyDeleteWe'll look forward to reading what you have to share with us.
DeleteOh, just realised the facebook group cited in the post is not a source of prompts but a place to share, in a group, work inspired by the actual prompt source: a website https://www.napowrimo.net/
ReplyDeleteThank you for the update!
DeleteWonderful prompt, Rommy. I had planned to go see what my local trees are up to, but... it began to rain. Still, through my window, I can the oaks are budding and a neighbor's apple tree has exploded with blossoms.
ReplyDeleteAnd Rosemary, I shall check out the links.
We had a deluge here too. I'm glad it's drying out a bit, as I have a date with a cherry blossom or two to keep!
DeleteI couldn't pass up a prompt about trees! Starting next week, we will be planting our trees for the year. White and red oaks, hickory and a few hard maples. I've already transplanted some red cedar that were growing in the wrong location.
ReplyDeleteHopefully, this will be a good and productive year (I say that every spring)
Cheers!
Best wishes for phenomenal growth and strong trees!
DeleteThank you for kicking off poetry month. I do have a tree in there!!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I hope the month ahead is filled with inspiration and delightful words.
DeleteI LOVE trees. Whenever I see an aged tree I lose myself wondering just what it observed in its lifetime; and when I see a tree being cut down I feel so sad!
ReplyDeleteSame! There are a few gorgeous old trees where I live, but I do get irked when I see trees cut down unnecessarily.
DeleteDear All Wish you a very Happy Easter.Stay Blessed and Safe
