Friday Writings #17: Heroes

Hello, word artists and admirers! I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels concerned about the news coming out of Ukraine these days. It all feels a little too much like a bad reboot of the Cold War. But the stories of heroism from the people of Ukraine have been awe inspiring. I hope that a just and lasting peace will be possible.

The floor is open for you to share your pieces. For those of you who wish to work from a prompt, I propose writing about heroes, however you choose to define the term. But as always, I will happily take pieces on any topic, fiction or non-fiction, in either poetry or prose format. Just be sure to keep prose to 369 words or fewer.

Next week, Rosemary will ask you to write about something that brings you joy, no matter how small or momentary.

  1. There were plenty of local heroes during and after our recent floods, swinging into action – taking small boats to rescue those trapped in rising waters; helping clean mud out of houses after those waters eventually subsided enough; setting up evacuation shelters; cooking and doing laundry for the dispossessed; donating clothing and equipment.... (All this in a great absence of Government assistance until much later, and then little.) But my Muse is feeling somewhat paralysed from the shock of it all – even though I myself was safe and sound. So I am going off-prompt and sharing some more February haiku instead.

    1. Thank goodness for all the ones who pitched in to help. It sounded very scary for a while! And *sigh* for the lackadaisical "official" aid. Hopefully some good came from it, even if it was late in coming.

    2. Australians Unite Concert with the Red Cross raised 25 million dollars tonight.Heartening. Someone said the devastation is like Hiroshima minus the bombs.Again the Government turned up late again with assistance....I wont be voting for them.

    3. That is indeed heartening news about the concert! The rest, I can't bear to dwell on. (But am putting together what things I can donate.)

    4. I'm glad money was raised to provide help where it was needed.

  2. I think you've mentioned one of the very few good things that can come out of these kind of atrocities: we are reminded that, although the world is full of horrible people, there are some really good souls out there.

  3. Haven't been here in some time, and it's good to be back. I had just written a poem about my mother this morning, so my choice was a no-brainer. What a great lady she was! I look forward to reading other offerings. We are seeing some real heroes in Ukraine, aren't we?
