Writers' Pantry #58: Is it Spring Yet?

Hello, Word Artists and Admirers! It feels like we’ve been getting snow every other day here in the Philly ‘burbs, giving February an extra surreal, Groundhog’s Day kind of flavor. And I know we’ve got it pretty easy compared to other parts of the United States right now. The ice has been pretty vicious to my neighbors in the southern part of the country, especially Texas.

One of the things I’m trying to do is remind myself that February (and this time of isolation) isn’t going to last forever. My friends and I keep talking about things we’re going to do when this is done to keep our spirits up. I’ve already promised to make special hot chocolate recipe for a friend of my Darling Youngest when we’ve all had our vaccinations (thanks Magaly for that recipe!) and a couple of friends of mine are contemplating day tripping to Philly’s Chinatown. What about you? Are there any future plans that add a little brightness to your day?

This upcoming Wednesday Rosemary will invite us to try a new poetic form, the Waltmarie, which allows for two poems in one (or two variations on the same theme). If you’d rather use prose, you could try an embedded narrative arranged in any way you choose.

Now it’s time to share all your word-filled wonders! I’m taking words old and new, poetry and prose, fiction or non-fiction. Just remember, one entry per person and if you chose to share a prose piece, please keep it to 369 words or fewer.

  1. Thanks for hosting, Rommy. I am glad I am not experiencing your snow, and am crossing my fingers and toes for old friends in Texas. Here we are having a different kind of day-after-day sameness – days and days of rain, and not much heat in the summer so far, at least in this part of Australia (though elsewhere there have been fires). So I am looking forward to autumn!

    1. I have worries too. Some have electricity back(ish) and have to deal with water supply and food issues now. It'll be a bit until it's all completely set right, from my understanding.

We're going to get a bit warmer up in the northeast this week, which will be a lovely change of pace.

  2. Hi Rommy, thanks for hosting. Thought I’d put a bit of sizzle in the pantry... :)

  3. Mmm... special hot chocolate! That sounds like an excellent idea for tonight. I will spend the day--my first day off in what seems like a million years--dusting my books. Yes, I'm grinning from ear to ear just thinking about it.

    Happy readings, everyone!

  4. I like the idea of planning for a post COVID era.

It’s nicer to be back after a very long hiatus.

  5. This note is for Magaly. For some unknown reason, my comments on your work disappear into the ether. I seem to have no trouble with those before or after you, however. Some setting on your account? Please know how much I appreciate your work and your look on life!

    1. We're managing here in the Philly 'burbs. I'm looking forward to the balmy 40 degree weather due later this week.

  7. I'm afraid my contribution is a bit dark but after 10 weeks of snow, cold and more snow.

I'll echo the sentiment from Graham: Stay warm everyone and for Rosemary to stay dry.

    Cheers!

    1. Thanks, Joel! Glad to see you here, to know you've survived all that. I'm not so badly off. We haven't had any really serious flooding, and today the rain has finally stopped and the weather is warming.

    2. Its completely understandable to go a bit dark. As I said to a friend, this February has felt like it was made up of nothing but Groundhog's Days. Spring (and more vaccines) can't come fast enough!

  8. We have a cruise scheduled for later if they'll let us board. I would love to come to Philly with you guys, Mrs. Jim doesn't remember being there before. But we did, it was on our way to NYC way back when the Liberty Bell had a new crack. We've been to all 50 states and then I was there before to visit our company headquarters. I'm looking forward to Rosemary's new form, I like experiment with poetry forms, that's the latent engineer in my blood. My write for this week is an experiment in writing Gothic Fiction Poems. It didn't turn our real good. And yes, we are recovering from the Texas Freeze way down here along the Gulf. Our shrubbery took a beating than the pool equipment froze when the power was down for 48 hours, and then on and off for two more days.

    1. Tuesday I will have had my second COVID-19 shot for two weeks. Thursday I am scheduled for my right eye cataract surgery, two weeks ago I did the left eye and can see again.

    2. Jim, you're having an eventful life one way and another! I guess some f the events you'd rather have done without. Good luck with the surgery!

It's not my new form (it's Candy's) but it's one I like so much that I wanted to both try it and share it.

You seem to have linked to the wrong post on your blog. I wasn't sure until I saw your comment here. You could give us the correct link if you like, and we can delete the old one – or, as it would be a late-ish posting now, you could wait and link your Gothic Fiction poem next Sunday. Up to you!

    3. Congrats on being so close to your second shot! That's one less thing to worry about. Our neighbor just had cataract surgery too. She is so thrilled with the results.
