Writers' Pantry 46: Playing Catch Up

Hello, Word Artists and Admirers! The last few weeks had me hyper-focusing on certain things *cough* to the exclusion of others. While I am super glad that my work (and the work of many, many others) paid off, I now need to, among other things, wrangle dust bunnies into submission (do you know how much corgis shed?) and switch out the summer clothes for winter clothes. I’m enjoying catching up on favorite podcasts and playlists as I go along. Do you like to have something playing in the background while cleaning too?

I'm listening to a fair bit of Hamilton lately.

On to the business of words. Later this week, Rosemary will ask us to write something celebratory, or to tell us about a particular celebration, real or imagined (heh, I may have some ideas). But for today, I am taking words both old and new, fiction or non-fiction, poetry or prose. One entry per person please, and if you choose prose, please keep it to 369 words or fewer.

  1. Sounds like you had your priorities right in those last few weeks.

I tend to forget to listen to things while houseworking, but when I do remember, I go for jazz on one of our radio stations or blues on Amazon Music. Lately I sometimes listen to the audiobook of Bruce Pascoe's 'Dark Emu', telling a truer history of Australian Aborigines than the invaders' version.

    1. That reminds me, I haven't listened to an audio book in ages. The last one I listened to was Traitor's Blade, when I drove to Pittsburgh and back to get my son from college just before lockdown. I did want to go back to that series eventually.

  2. There’s nothing wrong with sharpening your focus, Rommy, even if it’s only for a short period of time, and the things we forget about for a while can seem different when we return to them. I’ve been doing a bit of editing for someone else, so something else had to be neglected for the duration – cleaning. I’ll be catching up again next week. These days I listen to BBC radio 4 plays and stories while cleaning, especially when I’m ironing, as they take me to other places and introduce me to other writers.

    1. Oh that sounds cool! I should probably check BBC radio plays out. LOL, we don't have a heck of a lot to iron here. My son's internship ended and he was the only one ironing his things... if he remembered to.

  5. Catching up sounds like an outstanding idea. We might not have a lovely corgi, but our carpets can still use some extra TLC... the same goes for our closets, and my online profiles (I need to update websites and decide if I really want to start using Facebook again, maybe I will wait until my birthday for that).

And about having something playing on the background while doing things. Well, I can't survive without a book whispering in my ear, so yes. At the moment, I'm listening to a new recording of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, by Patrick Süskind.

    Happiest readings, everyone!

    1. OK, that title sounds really intriguing! What's it about? LOL, I'd definitely wait a bit on FB too, and see if it's really worth it.

    2. I started reading Perfume because a friend kept on saying that it was her favorite. I can't say that it is my favorite, lol!

    3. A friend of mine raved about Perfume when it first came out. I had a look. Yes, amazing writing, but I couldn't cope with the subject matter. I didn't last more than a few pages.

  6. I can imagine corgis shed quite a bit! I have plenty of pets, so say, it's just dog hair! Ignore it or leave my house! Or, love me, love my dog hair. I haven't been clothes shopping in so long I have barely any winter things. But, then again, I'm not going anywhere to wear them!

    1. LOL, yeah back when we had visitors to our house they knew that Kit hair would be a thing they were going to deal with. Also constant begging for attention from Kit too. :D
